Graphs

The graphs unit connects algebra to the coordinate grid. It covers coordinates and midpoints, straight-line graphs and y = mx + c, gradient with parallel and perpendicular lines, quadratic, cubic and reciprocal curves, real-life and distance-time graphs, solving equations graphically, and transforming graphs.

Straight-line graphs are the core: plotting them, finding the equation, and working with gradient and intercept. These are heavily tested on both tiers and feed into perpendicular lines at Higher. Quadratic graphs link straight back to the quadratics you meet in algebra. Real-life graphs, including reading rates from distance-time and velocity-time graphs, are a common applied context. Graph transformations and area under a graph are the grade 8 to 9 topics. Because this unit leans so heavily on algebra, make sure you can rearrange and solve equations confidently first.
